Overcoming bipolar  is a powerful and deeply moving account of one man’s triumph over a lifelong struggle with mental health and adversity. Alastair Hamilton takes us through the ups and downs of a fascinating life story.

He explains how his faith has provided a bedrock in his life - a constant source of strength and comfort despite the many challenges he has faced. The book is a fascinating insight into the way a person can continually bounce back from misfortune and disappointments. At each stage when fate intervenes, Alastair explains how he drew on his faith and inner belief to find his way through to better times.

There is a good combination of light and shade - challenging moments are offset by humorous incidents and impressive sporting achievements, particularly in cricket and tennis. This balance makes the pages flow and it is an easy, rewarding story to follow as a result.

What also emerges from the book is the strong support Alastair has had from his parents. He provides a moving tribute to the guiding lights they were all through his life. One standout moment in the narrative is when his father thanks Alastair at the end of his life for bringing him and his mother so much hope. That links back to the book’s title - and the power that hope can have in giving people the strength to heal and embrace opportunities for happiness and fulfilment.

This is not your average 'triumph over adversity' story but an honest account of how to forge on despite a series of significant curve balls over a lifetime and emerge stronger and wiser.   Interlaced throughout the book are hints on how family, friends and most importantly faith in an all-sufficient God helped the author push through the tough times. Whether you are a person of faith or not, this book will provide insight and encouragement on how to keep going when circumstances attempt to knock you sideways.

As a teenager excelling in sport and academic achievement, Alastair's hopes and dreams disintegrated as he suffered lifelong disabling episodes of mental and emotional illness. Each episode brought his life to a standstill. However with remarkable strength of spirit Alastair rebuilt his life each time, surfacing as a gracious, witty and valuable member of his community.
Alastair's book is a compelling inspiration about facing trauma with challenge, and brokenness with love and forgiveness. Drawing on his Christian faith in the face of suffering he has gained rather than lost, and keeps on giving.
